How do you get away from it all when you are already in the middle of nowhere?

Why, rent a room, of course! I have been trying to rent a room for a couple of weeks now, and I finally was able to get one last night. It was very comfy, and it had T.V.! It just got a couple of local channels, FOX, and the Discovery channel. The room was also very nice. It was kind of wood themed, and the free shampoo was almond and vanilla.

Working very hard...

I have been so busy that I haven't had enough time to update this as much as possible. I'll start out with the bad news around here. A couple of hikers in the sister lodge in Denali went missing last Thursday when they went out on a hike. They are experienced hikers, but they do not know the area. I am hoping that they will get back safely. Also, the kitchen flooded yesterday, as did dry storage. I'm not sure if any food or things were damaged, and I am hoping it stays that way. We still have yet to replace the dishwashers and cooks that have quit, and more are going to be fired soon. I have been able to convince a friend in New Zealand to come and help us out, since he has a bit of experience in food service. I just hope he can come here really soon. I do several jobs at once, and I am moving up to desserts and salads sometime soon (I am taking the place of a woman who is pregnant and swelling like a balloon).

Finally some down time...

I apologize for not posting recently, as it has become very hectic at the lodge ever since some of our cooks and dishwashers have been quitting randomly. Other than that, it has been pretty exciting. On my last weekend off I went whitewater rafting (which was scary yet fun), and I plan on going to a cruise around Prince William Sound tomorrow. The weather around here is always either mild or cold, which is really enjoyable during the summer when I would usually be sweating profusely if I were back in Oregon. Prepping food has been really simple ever since I started to remember what needed to be done every day, and I am apparently so good at it that I am starting to be trained as a line cook. My nickname is now Tater.

Since all I did yesterday was peel, slice, and wash potatoes, the line cooks and the head chef gave me the nickname Tater. I was still called that today even though I didn't even touch one potato. Today I breaded halibut and salmon, peeled some horseradish for garnishing steaks, rubbed down 2 large roasts, boiled 12 eggs, and marked some new towels so that they would be returned to the kitchen after being washed. While I was breading fish, the first guests arrived at the lodge my motor coach. We had to go outside and wave at them, and I felt like I should have not been out there because I was covered in dirt from the horseradish, blood from the roast, and flour, egg wash, and panko from the fish. At least they knew that I was working hard to get their dinner fixings ready. After I was done with work, I was given a paper chef hat by Ryan, the head chef. He had worn it out to greet the guests, and I had asked him for it since he said that he hated it. I'll be sure to take a picture of it when I grab batteries for my camera. The gift shop opened up today, so I went there and bought a couple of things. They sadly didn't have any stamps, so if anyone wants to send me something, I would love some stamps. I promise if you send me stamps, I will send you a postcard from Alaska.

First post, but I have been here for a week.

Since everyone has been bugging me about it, I have finally gotten my blog up. I left Oregon and arrived in Seattle at about 12:20, but I had to run to the next flight, which was all for naught because after I got my new seat (they had given my old seat away to someone) and boarded the flight, we had to go back to the airport. There was smoke in the cabin and the air conditioning wasn't working. After a couple of minutes running around, I finally got a new flight time, which was 3:30. I had to make some calls and tell the people that were picking me up that I was going to be late, and after that I got a fruit smoothie with the 8 dollar lunch voucher given to me by the nice guy that booked me the next flight to Anchorage. The flight boarded at 3:00, but it took us another hour to leave the airport due to the fact that a light bulb had to be changed and some paperwork signed before we could get airborne. I finally arrived in Alaska around 7 or so, and after another late person arrived from Texas, we got on the road. It took us 4 hours of driving to get to the lodge, and we arrived at 2 in the morning. The drive there was somewhat eventful. We did see 3 moose, and the sun never set completely.
